| Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic |
| A 3D RPG Star Wars adventure. |
At last, the first RPG version of Jedi Knight adventure. If you are a seasoned gamers of Star Wars Jedi Knight and Neverwinter Nights series, you will have no difficurty at all in spotting all the similar elements that made the game a success. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, imagine Neverwinter Nights in 3rd person, or Jedi Knights in a turn based combat.
When creating a character, I'm suprised for the first time in create a Jedi Knight involved steps you see creating a D&D RPG character! Familar attributes like Dexterity and Charisma, feats to choose from when fighting, and skills like lockpicking (here you hack computer instead).
The first that I've noticed is the way you move about in the game, that and the mapping system seems to be brought over from the NWN system. Next, the way you engage in combat is also pretty much the same in NWN. Finally, a Jedi with an inventory system! Just like NWN!
The weapon arsenal is totally different from any Jedi Knights series, from armors to boots, guns to swords. And yes, the all time favorite lightsabers too. On top of the 3 different style of lightsabres (single, dual and double-bladed), you can modify the saber by switching the crystal inside it. Some crystal determine the color of the beam, others adds special damage like extra cold damage or light drain. Changing these crystal when facing different kinds of enermy is one of the key to winning a tough fight.
Many new force powers has been introduced to the game, think of them as the magic spells in NWN, making Jedi Knights looking like Sorcerers and Mages. The amount of force needed for the powers is determined which side you are inclined towards, being on the light side will allow you to use less amount of force when using powers of the light side, vise versa for the dark.
Just like the alignment seens in D&D games, thing are more straightforward here. No more Lawful Evil or Netrual Good, just the light side or dark. It's just a matter of how much. The light and dark metter is determined by your action directly. Donate credits to a homeless move you towards the light side, using your mind-trick to bargain from a merchant to the dark. So you can easily steer yourself towards any side you want.
The party system let you recruit up to 9 other members, but you don't get to choose as they are all pre-fixed. At one point, you can choose to get one less member if you stick to the dark side. Not very rewarding huh? You can only choose up to 2 other members at a time to go on your mission. At some point of time, some members will not be available due to training or personal matters.
The last thing, but the most important though, to mention is the plot itself. The story is rich and non-linear. It begin from an era before the Trilogy, so expect to see Jedi Knights everywhere. You can travel from planet to planet in any order you like, and countless quests for you to take on. The quests help you to shape your character and get special quest items or equipments. This may be a spoiler, but the story come with a big twist.
A great game not to be missed, Star Wars fans must get it or shouldn't call themselve one. |
