| Bring the paper & pen experiences onto the internet |
Dungeon & Dragons, Forgotten Realms, these names are no strangers to any paper & pen players of D&D. I'm one of them. Seeing a internet version of the original paper & pen game, is the last wish any D&D player would like to have.
Let's talk from the Player's point of view. There are 7 races and 11 classes of characters to choose from. And with the 3rd Edition Rules of D&D, you can fix classes almost anyway you want it. There are thousands of combinations to shape your characters into. Every player is allow to hire one henchman each, but the bad news is that there are only 6 of them. So it will be first-come-first-served basis in the multiplayer mode. Unlike from other non-D&D-rule RPGs, you can do almost anything anywhere, in any manner you like. Like if you don't like the way that merchant bargains, you could just kill him and hopefully find the item you desired on him, and fighting off the guards in that area. Actions will reflect on your alignment. So be Good, or be Evil.
From the Dungeon Master's point of view, one is allowed to monitor and control the world with players right in the middle of the game. DM could drop gold and items for the players, even monsters if he doesn't like them. So if you don't want dragons to appear right beside you out from no where, you better be nice to the DM. Afterall, he's the God in the game.
From the Builder's point of view, the world can be built and shaped in just the way you want it. For players who just can't get enough from the game, like myself, would want to build a world and plot of your own. You are more than welcome to do so, with the Aurora Toolset that came with the game.
The graphic is comparable to Dungeon Siege's 3D engine. The environmental sounds are also very well done. Cave and dungeon echos give you the atmospheric impressions of the types of monsters or demons that you are going to meet. Most of the features are user-friendly so you wouldn't have a hard time finding them.
Due to the fact that there are so many requests for the game to be launched earlier, the first version of the game was shipped with a few disappointments. Bugs, for one, are all over the game. But Bioware is fast in correcting them. Character level has only a maximum of 20, with is too low compared to games like Diablo 2. The fact that D&D only developed rules for post-level-20 character AFTER the release of NWN, we just have to wait for the expansion. If you ask why not delay the game until everything is in place? Then you will have to ask yourself are you willing to wait for another year? My answer is NO, don't wait, be impressed even when the bugs bug you. |
