| Civilization 3 |
| A Whole New Era |
11 years ago, a geeky boy with spectacles started playing the first Civilization Series… Fascinated by Sid Meier’s Civilization, he made a wish that Sid will produce more of such games in the future. Now, the boy, already grown up, has completed Civilization 3. That’s right, that geeky boy (still geeky), is I, the one and only Pepper.
Sick and tired of playing Counter Strike? Want a slower paced but interesting strategy game? Guess Civilization 3 is just the game you need to get away from CS, for a while anyway. After spanning Civilization 1 and 2, followed up by similar games like Call to Power, Sid Meier has finally come up with Civilization 3, much better and far many more improvements as compared to the old Civilization series.
In addition to the old features, Civilization 3 offers new features like allowing players to select their winning conditions. One can win by conquering all other civilizations, dominating two-thirds of the world, having the first civilization to build and launch a spaceship to Alpha Centauri, having voted the United Nations Secretary by other civilizations or winning it by having an overwhelming culture that causes other civilization to yearn to be part of your civilization. Sid has introduced two new winning strategies, winning the game culturally or having voted as the UN Secretary by other civilizations. Building Wonders of the World, having temples, cathedrals and research labs help raise cultural influence of your civilization. While complying to most demands during negotiations and helping out allies in times of need, increases your chances of being voted as the new UN Secretary.
As different from the older series of Civilizations, one can have a “Research Queue”, that is having a schedule of what advances to research on. A broad overview of technologies, the “Advance Tree”, is just a press of a button away and players are able to view the overall picture of advances in which their own civilization would want to pursue. New advances are also added in Civilization 3, like Smart Weapons and Espionage advances which allows the creation of new units like Radar Artillery and new strutures like the Intelligence Agency.
The Wonders of the World concept has also be improved. They are being spilt into 2 main categories, Small Wonders and Great Wonders. All civilizations are able to build the Small Wonders, for example, the Heroic Epics, Iron Works and the Wall Street. However, only one civilization is allowed to build a Great Wonder, like the Pyramids, Hanging Gardens, Sun Tzu’s Art of War, Cure for Cancer and many more. Each Wonder has both a specific and general benefits, which will helps your Civilization in many ways. For example, the Leonardo’s Workshop Great Wonder helps to cut the costs of upgrading any units by 50 percent and the Pyramids provides the benefits of putting a Granary in every one of your cities on the same continent.
There are 16 different civilizations to choose from and each of them is represented by a different color. Each civilization has its own unique qualities and starting advances when the player begins the game. Each civilization also has a “special unit” which other civilization will not have. If you choose the Romans, they will be industrious and militaristic in nature, have the starting advances of Masonry and Warrior Code, and having Legionary as their unique unit.
Alas, there are so many more features in the game that it will be too much to write on. For strategy game fans, this will be one game that you will look forward to. For non- strategy game fans, this may be the game which will change your outlook and perspective on strategy games, for the better of course.
